The story of Bora Yildirim is one of relentless growth, elite performance, and a full-circle return to mentorship. From his rise as the starting goaltender for the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings, to signing professionally with the HK Gladiators of the SHL, and now stepping behind the bench as a coach, Yildirim’s journey reflects everything the Riverkings program stands for: development, opportunity, and legacy.
A Season for the Record Books
When Yildirim arrived in Wisconsin Rapids, he didn’t just compete for the crease — he claimed it. As the starting goaltender, he delivered one of the most dominant seasons in Riverkings history.
USPHL Premier Goaltending Excellence (2023–24)
- Save Percentage: .950 — best in the entire USPHL Premier
- Goals Against Average: 1.56 — third-best in the league
- Record: 12‑2‑3‑2
- Playoffs: .947 save percentage, including a 47‑save performance at Nationals
His .950 save percentage ranked seventh all-time in USPHL Premier history — a staggering achievement for a first-year North American goaltender.
Yildirim’s consistency and ability to steal games helped propel the Riverkings to Nationals for the first time, cementing his place as one of the most influential netminders ever to wear the Riverkings crest.
He was recognized accordingly:
2023–24 USPHL Premier Fan’s Choice Goaltender of the Year
Yildirim earned 926 of 1,543 votes (60%), dominating the nationwide poll.
Turning Pro: HK Gladiators (SHL)
After his breakout season in Wisconsin Rapids, Yildirim took the next step — signing professionally with the HK Gladiators of the SHL. The move marked a major milestone, bringing him back to Europe to compete at a higher level while representing both the Gladiators and Riverkings development pipelines.
His transition to the SHL showcased the maturity and technical refinement he built in Wisconsin Rapids. The Gladiators gained a poised, battle-tested goaltender capable of handling pro-level pace and pressure.
The Coach Emerges: HKM Gladiators U18
Yildirim stepped into coaching — a natural evolution for a player known for his communication, preparation, and leadership. The HKM Gladiators U18 played in the highest U18 league in Slovakia, the Kaufland Extraliga Dorastu.
Volunteer Assistant Coach – Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings
Now back with the Rapids, Yildirim has returned to the Riverkings bench as a volunteer assistant coach, strengthening the program’s development pipeline. His presence gives Riverkings players direct access to someone who has stood in their crease, worn their jersey, and climbed to the professional ranks.
From Gladiators prospect, to Riverkings starter, to SHL professional, and now a mentor shaping tomorrow’s players — Bora Yildirim’s journey is still being written. His impact is felt in every locker room he enters, every goaltender he mentors, and every young player who sees what’s possible through hard work and opportunity.
He’s not just coaching. He’s building Riverkings.
